Family Care Plan Requirements To Expand

The family care plan policy, which requires service members to provide information regarding care and custody of dependent children during deployments or travel, is expanding. Among the changes, military parents with custody of children from previous relationships must file family care plans. As with all family care plans, service members should include temporary guardianship arrangements, financial support, health care information, and other relevant data. The change is aimed at accounting for children of so-called “blended” families, and avoiding custody fights that on occasion arose because of the lack of clear and coordinated care plans. Base legal offices will provide help, as will Military OneSource (on the Web at www.militaryonesource.com) or Military Homefront (on the Web at www.militaryhomefront.dod.mil).
