The Federal Communications Commission has circulated an order that would increase the per-minute cost of pre-paid phone cards. Because deployed troops often use the cards to contact their family members, the Fleet Reserve Association (FRA) sent a letter urging the FCC to reconsider “until U.S. military service members and civilian employees no longer face sustained daily combat and the threat of loss of life and limb.” The FRA also sent a letter to members of the Senate and House Armed Service Committees asking them to block any increase. In addition, 15 members of Congress have written the FCC a letter asking it to reject any increase in the cost of the cards.
