The littoral combat ship Fort Worth joined the destroyer Sampson Jan. 3 on station near the site where AirAsia flight QZ8501 disappeared. With the discovery of wreckage and bodies from the airliner, Fort Worth offered shallow-water capabilities to assist international rescue teams. Included are an MH-60R helicopter and two 11-meter rigid hull inflatable boats. Sampson, which had been in the vicinity since Dec. 29, recovered several bodies and transferred them to Indonesian authorities. Both ships will continue to assist the search-and-recovery effort as long as they are needed.
