GAO: Firm WTU Policy Needed

Since media reports in 2007 unveiled the poor quality of care service members received while assigned to the Warrior Training Unit (WTU) at Walter Reed Army Medical Center, D.C., the service has made considerable improvements, according to an April 20 report by the Government Accountability Office. But more needs to be done, the GAO report stated. Improvements in staff-to-service member ratios helped in some cases, and most positions have been staffed, the report stated. But Walter Reed, the facility that took the brunt of criticism, still has not addressed either issue. Also, Walter Reed "might require a different staffing model, that decreases the number of service members assigned to staff members," the report stated, adding that the Army has no plans to implement such a change. The report noted that the Army’s surveys of WTU service members have elicited response rates too low to draw any reliable conclusions.
