GAO: More Help Needed for Returning Combatants

The armed services are not doing enough to ensure that service members get the mental health care they need after returning from combat in Afghanistan and Iraq, the Government Accountability Office stated in a Sept. 4 report to Congress. The services require each member who returns from combat to fill out a questionnaire, the GAO noted, adding that follow-up procedures are left to the discretion of each service, and to individual commands. The lack of standardized processing for such information could lead to higher incidences of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental health issues related to experiences in battle, the GAO stated. The Defense Department should keep a tighter rein on this critical first step in a process that is in place to hopefully mitigate mental health problems before they happen, GAO stated.
