Guard Troops Assist in Tornado, Flooding Relief Efforts

National Guard members from four states moved into areas affected by recent tornadoes and heavy rains, to help local agencies offer relief to victims. At Gov. Brad Henry’s request, 25 Oklahoma Army Guard soldiers provided security to the town of Picher, which lay in the path of a strong tornado that tore through the area on May 10. Arkansas Guard troops from the 875th Engineer Battalion also helped law enforcement officials in the towns of Jonesboro and Stuttgart, after tornados struck on May 5. Another 18 Missouri Guard soldiers moved into the tornado-ravaged towns of Newtonia and Grany, to help police provide security and prevent looting. And in Delaware, Guard members from the 262nd Maintenance Company, 261st Signal Brigade, and 72nd Troop Command deployed in six light medium tactical vehicles and one "deuce and a half" truck to assist in emergency operations in several beachfront towns that were pounded with heavy rains.
