The home buyer tax credit, which amounted to $8,000 for first-time home buyers and $6,500 for repeat buyers, has been extended for deploying members of the armed forces – as well as foreign service and intelligence community employees. All other U.S. home buyers had to enter into a binding sales contract by April 30 and must close by Sept. 30, 2010. But Congress determined that the extension was in order for military, foreign service, and intelligence personnel. As such, the deadlines for them are April 30, 2011 (for signing a contract) and June 30, 2011, for closing. The extensions apply to those ordered to serve "official extended duty," meaning, any extended period of service outside of the U.S. for at least 90 days, any time between Dec. 31, 2008, and May 1, 2010.
