Incoming Sailor Rescues Child

A future sailor saved a 6-year-old boy from drowning while waiting to enter the Navy Delayed Entry Program. Chaney Bryant, 34, was staying at the San Diego Marriott Hotel June 18, where he was scheduled to take the oath of enlistment the next day. While relaxing at the hotel pool, Bryant heard the child’s mother cry out that the youngster was at the bottom of the pool and unresponsive. Bryant responded quickly by diving in, recovering the child, and reviving him with CPR and artificial resuscitation. He then stayed with the child until an ambulance arrived. The child made a complete recovery. When the commander of San Diego Military Entrance Processing Station, Cmdr. Kyle Vernon learned what had happened, she presented Bryant with a command coin at his swearing-in ceremony. Bryant plans to attend technical school to become a cryptologic technician.
