Service members who are married to other service members no longer are enrolled automatically in the Family Servicemembers’ Group Life Insurance (SGLI) program, the Defense Department announced April 29. Beneficiaries can receive as much as $400,000 under conventional SGLI, while Family SGLI pays as much as $100,000 to a service member upon the death of a spouse, or $10,000 for dependent children. Dual-service couples still can participate in Family SGLI, but must fill out and submit forms to do so. The Family SGLI premium for a 35-year-old spouse is $5 per month.
