Iraq Rotations, Extensions Announced

The Pentagon announced that roughly 15,000 troops – mostly Marines and soldiers – will either deploy to Iraq next summer or have their present tours extended. Army units headed out for 12-month tours include: 4th Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Ga.; 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, Wahiawa, Hawaii; and the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, Fort Hood, Texas. The 1st Cavalry Division Headquarters will remain deployed for an additional 23 days, and some elements of the II Marine Expeditionary Force will stay in Iraq an additional 79 days. Army Gen. Ray Odierno, the commander of U.S. forces in Iraq, says the extended units will provide added security for the two months that follow Iraq’s January elections.
