Iraqi Troops Retake Fallujah

Iraqi forces have expelled Islamic State fighters from the city of Fallujah. Supported by coalition air strikes against units, machine-gun and rocket-propelled grenade positions, the Iraqis began the fight to liberate the city on May 21. Fallujah, located in Anbar province, was the site of fierce fighting between U.S./Coalition forces and al-Qaida in 2004-05. Defense Secretary Ash Carter hailed the military success, calling it “another milestone in our joint efforts to accelerate (the Islamic State’s) defeat and continue supporting our Iraqi partners moving forward.”
