Is There an Army

The Army is studying the possibility of using smartphones as administrative and training tools. Under a two-phase plan, the Army Capabilities Integration Center wants to learn first if smartphone videos and games can serve as convenient, small platforms for interactive instruction. Then, researchers hope to determine how secure the devices are. Ultimately, soldiers with smartphones could pinpoint enemy locations, researchers envision. “Nobody has better ideas on how to make smartphones useful than the soldiers themselves,” says Ed Mazzanti, the center’s deputy director of requirements integration. Soldiers attached to the Army Experiment Task Force at Fort Bliss, Texas, will be the first to get smartphones under the study.
