Japanese PM To Honor Base Deal

Naoto Kan, the new prime minister of Japan, will honor a recent agreement his predecessor made with the U.S. regarding the relocation of Futenma Marine Corps Air Station, Voice of America reported June 7. Under the agreement, the U.S. will move the facility to a less-populated site on Okinawa. Yukio Hatoyama, the man Kan succeeded, was ousted from power for backing down from a campaign promise to back out of the relocation deal. Futenma has long drawn numerous complaints from Okinawan citizens, largely centering around aircraft noise and occasional incidents of criminal actions they say U.S. service members have committed.
