Korean War Vet Awarded Silver Star

William V. Wuorinen of Naselle, Wash., finally received the Silver Star medal he earned nearly 60 years earlier while serving in the Army during the Korean War. A paperwork glitch deprived Wuorinen of his medal, even though two other soldiers in his unit received the award. According to official records, Wuorinen and a comrade helped remove wounded soldiers while under fire by Chinese soldiers, during heated combat that took place March 16-17, 1953. The operation took place on Hill 355, near Un-Dong, North Korea. He served with the 1st Platoon, Company L. 3rd Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Division, at the time. “It means more to me than you can ever know,” said Wuorinen as he received the award during a Jan. 30 ceremony held at Naselle-Grays River Valley School.
