Ky. Exempts Military from State Income Tax

Service members who claim Kentucky as their home of record no longer have to pay state income tax as of next Jan. 1. Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear signed the measure into law during a Sept. 9 ceremony held at Fort Campbell, the huge post and home to the 101st Airborne Division that straddles the Kentucky/Tennessee border between Hopkinsville, Ky., and Clarksville, Tenn. Kentucky becomes the 11th state to provide the state income tax exemption to those in uniform. The other states are Florida, Alaska, Michigan, Texas, Oregon, New Hampshire, Nevada, South Dakota, Wyoming, and Washington. Service members can expect, on average, to save about $1,000 each under the new tax exemption.
