The Navy christened the newest littoral combat ship, Montgomery, during a Nov. 8 ceremony at Austal USA shipyard in Mobile, Ala. Like other vessels in its class, Montgomery is capable of conducting a variety of shallow-water missions – including mitigation of mine and submarine threats. The ship can travel faster than 40 knots and navigate easily in depths of less than 20 feet. Like other littoral combat ships. Montgomery can be reconfigured within days while in port to perform other missions. The ship will be home-ported at San Diego Naval Station, Calif.
