The Marine Corps expects to start issuing dress blues to every Marine recruit starting Oct. 1. All other enlisted Marines will have four years to buy their own uniforms. Those who wish to purchase early, however, could find them unavailable at Marine Corps Community Services until the sole manufacturer of the enlisted dress blue coat ramps up production. Crown Clothing Company of Vineland, N.J., has been producing about 30,000 coats a year. In order to outfit all enlisted Marines, the company may be asked to contract for 40,000 coats for recruits and reservists alone, said a spokeswoman from the Marine uniform board. Crown Clothing owner Howard Levin said he has hired 10 more employees for the factory floor and is prepared to increase production by 30 percent. Availability of officers’ dress blue uniforms will not be affected by the change.
