A few days after awarding former soldier Jerome White with the Medal of Honor, the White House announced that another former service member – retired Marine Cpl. William “Kyle” Carpenter – would receive the nation’s highest award for combat valor. Carpenter will receive his medal June 19 at the White House. According to official records, Carpenter earned the honor for “courageous actions” during a Nov. 21, 2010 firefight in Helmand province, Afghanistan, while serving as an automatic rifleman with Company F, 2nd Battalion, 9th Marines, Regimental Combat Team 1, 1st Marine Division (Forward), I Marine Expeditionary Force (Forward). Carpenter, of Flowood, Miss., was medically retired because of the wounds he sustained in the fight.
