Marines Authorize Retroactive CAR Awards

On the heels of an order from the Marine commandant authorizing award of the Combat Action Ribbon for appropriate conduct during attacks by improvised explosive devices (IEDs), the Marine Corps has issued instructions for retroactive awards. U.S. Marine Corps Forces, Central Command (MarCent) will coordinate the retroactive awards for Marines deployed since Oct. 7, 2001. All CAR recommendations previously disapproved will be reviewed by May 1, 2006. In addition, MarCent was directed to ensure that all other CAR recommendations for Marines and attached Sailors made between Oct. 7, 2001 and Feb. 22, 2006 (the date of the IED authorization) are considered. MarCent also will see that former and retired Marines (including attached Sailors) or the next of kin of deceased veterans have the opportunity to submit requests for the CAR. See ALMAR 10/06 for IDE authorization and MarAdmin Message 118/06 for coordinating instructions.
