Marines Toughen Seat Belt Rules

Any Marine caught operating a vehicle without wearing a seat belt will face stiffer penalties. A first offense now will result in a 30-day suspension of driving privileges, applying to private and government vehicles. First-time violators also will have to attend a remedial-driver improvement course. Second offenses result in six-month suspensions; third offenses result in one-year suspensions. The order came down Nov. 29 from Marine Corps Commandant Gen. John F. Amos. “If you’re a forklift operator, you’re out of a job,” said Brian Korves, the safety officer at Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow, Calif.
