An Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense system launched from the guided missile cruiser Lake Erie successfully intercepted a medium-range ballistic missile target over the Pacific Ocean Oct. 4. The test missile was launched from the Pacific Missile Range Facility in Kauai, Hawaii, earlier that day. The AN/SPY-1 radar on Lake Erie detected it and engaged the Aegis system, which developed a plan and launched a missile that ultimately hit and destroyed the target. The action marked the 28th successful intercept for Aegis since testing began in 2002. The Navy conducted the test in conjunction with the Missile Defense Agency and U.S. Pacific Command.
