Army Secretary John M. McHugh approved June 20 a directive authorizing 33,000 more positions to female soldiers that previously had been closed. Units service-wide should see qualified women arriving for duty in the coming months, Lt. Gen. Howard B. Bromberg, deputy chief of staff, G-1, said. “Female leaders will be assigned first to provide a support network for junior female soldiers and to offer advice to the units’ male leadership,” Bromberg said. Fourteen military occupational specialties (MOS) remain closed to women – including enlisted engineer, field artillery, infantry, and armor. The new directive also excludes special-operations units.
