Mullen: ‘Leadership’ Key To Resolving Suicide Problem

Acknowledging the high suicide rates among all of the services since 2006, particularly in the Army, Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Adm. Mike Mullen found reason for hope. Speaking at the Center for the Intrepid at Brooke Army Medical Center, Texas, on April 17, Mullen noted that of the 54,000 soldiers stationed at Fort Hood, there has been one suicide since January. "As tragic as each one is, that’s a pretty remarkable number when you consider the number of soldiers who are there," Mullen said. "I think the solution is leadership," he added, at both the top and non-commissioned officer levels. "Our stress levels are up, and we have to realize that stress is driving a lot of this," he said. "The first big step in taking care of our problem is acknowledging you have one – and we do."
