Officers and chief petty officers in six major Navy communities began testing new service dress khaki uniforms on May 31. The testing will continue through August. If approved, the khakis – which bear a strong resemblance to World War II- and Vietnam War-era uniforms – will lighten seabags considerably. "With the service dress khaki, the wearer could easily go from service to dress just by donning a tie and a jacket," said Robert Carroll, head of the Navy Uniform Matters Office. Officers and chiefs presently must carry two sets of uniforms, to comply with regulations regarding seasonal changes.
