All Navy recruits who arrive at enlisted boot camp as of Jan. 3 will see their time in basic military training (BMT) extended to 10 weeks. Navy leadership decided to implement the two-week extension and use the time to provide additional leadership and professional-development instruction.
“This additional training reinforces character development with a warfighting spirit so our Navy is strong, lethal and ready,” said Rear Adm. Jennifer Couture, commander of Naval Service Training Command.
Sailors would be able to use what they learn during the additional two weeks of BMT throughout their Navy careers, Couture said. This “Sailor for Life” phase will offer mentorship training, small-unit leadership and advanced Warrior Toughness training, as well as personal development under the service’s MyNavy Coaching initiative.
