James F. Guerts, the Navy’s chief civilian in charge of research, development and acquisition, has eliminated the service’s unmanned systems office. Established in October 2015 by then-Navy Secretary Ray Mabus, the office had been responsible for managing unmanned-vehicle activities. Guerts justified the change, Seapower Magazine reported, by saying that the Navy has completed its Unmanned Systems Roadmap. Now is “a logical point to move forward,” Guerts said. “The integration of manned and unmanned systems into a seamless fighting force is an objective of our unmanned systems strategy and critical to our future naval force.”
