The overall selection rate for the active-duty chief petty officer board that convened June 25 will be 21.49 percent, down from 24.2 percent for last year. This opportunity percentage is less than the E-8 and E-9 advancement rates as well as the petty officer rates for the spring cycle. Nevertheless, officials say that anything above 20 percent overall is acceptable. On the positive side, E-7 quotas are available for every rating. Highest percentage of selection opportunities are: Cryptologic Technician (Interpretive) rating Group 1, which includes basic linguists with Arabic, Korean or French language skills, at 64.52 percent chance; submarine-qualified machinist’s mates (weapons) at 57.14 percent; and submarine-qualified non-nuclear electronics technicians at 41.29 percent. Lowest percentages are: fleet musicians at 5.17 percent; and ship’s servicemen at 6.16 percent.
