Marines and Sailors at Camp Pendleton, California, and other installations in the region are continuing to lend a hand in upgrading their barracks.
The “Operation Clean Sweep II” initiative follows a successful first stab that began last October, which saw the completion of 4,000 self-help projects and more than 2,000 work orders – all completed mostly by service members themselves. Contractors, volunteers and Navy Seabees also are helping, with oversight provided by experts in facility maintenance.
Besides Pendleton, other sites undergoing renovation include Marine Corps Air-Ground Center at Twentynine Palms, Marine Corps Logistics Base Barstow, Marine Corps Air Station Miramar – all in California – and Yuma Marine Corps Air Station, Arizona.
The initiative includes repairing drywall, washers and dryers, replacement of window screens, replacement of air conditioning units and other areas in need of attention. The aim is to reduce the backlog of maintenance requests and increase both living standards and operational readiness.
Barracks residents got firsthand instructions in performing the upgrades and installations. The Navy and Marines hope to establish year-round training protocols that would enable residents to take active roles in the upkeep of the spaces in which they live.
