Navy Seeks Income Tax Assistance Volunteers

The Navy is encouraging local commands to provide personnel, equipment and facilities to operate the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA)/Electronic Tax Filing (ELF) program. NAVADMIN 288/07 stresses the advantage of the program to sailors and to the command. For example there are no preparation fees, compared to $140 for the average electronically filed return. Also, faster refunds are deposited directly into a sailor’s bank account. In addition, the program offers fewer mistakes, with less than a 1 percent error rate compared to 15 percent for paper returns. The NAVADMIN says that commands should either send sailors on temporary additional duty (TAD) for the 12-week tax season, or allow them to work part-time at tax assistance centers, particularly during February. The goal is to provide one volunteer or TAD tax preparer per 100 members of the command. For further information see NAVADMIN 288/07.
