Navy Tests Work-From-Home Plan

Certain Navy officers who are assigned to shore billets may be able to work from home, without having to move their families to new commands, under a new pilot program. At first, only eight officers will be selected for the work-at-home slots. The Navy will provide them with computers, docking stations, and government phones. Commands closest in proximity to their homes will prepare fitness reports. Officers would gain by not having to make permanent-change-of-station moves; the Navy would benefit by keeping its personnel in areas with lower costs of living, thereby avoiding payment of higher housing allowances. Interested officers must request recommendations for the billets through their chains of command, which in turn would prepare and forward nominations to the Navy Personnel Command by e-mail.
