Sailors who submit documents to selection boards or for documents bound for their official military personnel files must still use their Social Security number as their military identification number, according to NAVADMIN 201/08. That could change sometime soon: Aware that wide accessibility to SSNs has been linked to identity theft, the Navy wants to eliminate the SSN requirement. But until such a plan is approved, any relevant documents that do not include SSNs where appropriate will be returned to their senders.
