In response to the recent publication of personal information about service members and their families by the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), the Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) is informing all sailors and Marines who are affected. The NCIS is advising these sailors and Marines about safety procedures they should be following. In the meantime, NCIS and the services are advising the ranks to be careful about their use of social media. “The data ISIL retrieved on service members was not the result of hacking into Department of Defense networks, it was obtained from public internet sites,” the Marine Corps stated in an April 1 announcement to all hands. “Marine Corps leadership has no intent to restrict the use of social media or online activities that are compliant with existing policy,” the statement said. Rather, the aim is “only to prevent exploitation of data residing online or on social platforms,” it said. The announcement ordered all commanders to ensure that related policies are being followed. The ranks, as well, are being ordered “to review their online footprint” and ensure that they are doing everything possible to protect their privacy and the security of any military information they may have.
