With new GI Bill benefits taking effect Aug. 1, Defense Department officials are imparting some related advice to service members. Under the change, the education benefits can be transferred to spouses and children. Service members should transfer at least one month’s worth of GI Bill benefits to all family members while on active duty. The benefits are not transferrable once they leave, unless they reenter the service. Likewise, once service members do leave, they cannot add additional family members as GI Bill beneficiaries. The new Post 9/11 GI Bill provides money that can be used to pursue any degree program. It also helps pay for some housing, books, and supplies. To transfer the benefits, visit the Transferability of Educational Benefits Web site at https://www/dmdc.osd.mil/TEB . The Department of Veterans Affairs manages the Post 9/11 GI Bill.
