After putting it through a series of tests, soldiers from the 1st Air Cavalry Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, will deploy and operate the Army’s latest unmanned vehicle system from their base in Camp Taji, Iraq, the Pentagon announced. The MQ-1C Sky Warrior can carry Hellfire missiles and boasts a wingspan nearly seven and a half feet longer than the MQ-1 Predator. And Sky Warrior, unlike Predator, will be flown by soldiers on the ground in the field. Though still technically a prototype until full testing is complete, the Army will use Sky Warrior on reconnaissance, surveillance, and target acquisition missions. If the project succeeds, the Army plans to deploy Sky Warriors with every aviation brigade beginning in 2011.
