President Obama presented the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy to members of the U.S. Naval Academy football team in an April 21 ceremony at the White House’s Rose Garden, marking the Midshipmen’s 34-0 defeat of Army and 33-27 defeat of Air Force during the 2008 football season. While praising their gridiron prowess, Obama also hailed the Middies and their counterparts at West Point and in Colorado for their commitment to the nation. He also recognized Lt. Cmdr. Wesley Brown, the first black man to graduate from the Naval Academy. Obama will deliver the keynote address during commencement ceremonies at Annapolis later this spring.
