Phoenix VA Director Fired

Sharon Helman, the director of the beleaguered Phoenix Health Care System, was fired Nov. 24. Troubles at the Arizona facility, which became public earlier this year, centered upon false health-care logs that made it appear that veterans were receiving timely care to which they were entitled. A further probe revealed that Phoenix was not the only facility within the Department of Veterans Affairs that was plagued by slow and inefficient service. The scandal brought down then-VA Secretary Eric K. Shinseki. Helman’s removal came in the aftermath of an investigation by the VA inspector general’s office, which confirmed allegations of mismanagement. “Lack of oversight and misconduct by VA leaders runs counter to our mission of serving veterans, and VA will not tolerate it,” Secretary Robert A. McDonald – Shinseki’s successor – said in a statement accompanying the announcement of Helman’s sacking. Glenn Grippen has been named interim director of the Phoenix facility.
