POW, MIA Missions Consolidate

The Defense Department is consolidating the offices that are responsible for prisoners of war (POW) and those missing in action (MIA). The move, announced Jan. 9 by Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel, combines the existing Defense Prisoner of War/Missing Personnel Office and Joint Personnel Accounting Command (JPAC). The new office will fall under the auspices of Christine Wormuth, the undersecretary of defense for policy. Navy Rear Adm. Michael Franken will serve as interim director. Air Force Maj. Gen. Kelly McKeague, who had served as JPAC commander, will become the new agency’s deputy director. Army Lt. Gen. Michael Linnington will become Wormuth’s top military advisor. Linnington currently is the military deputy to the undersecretary of defense for personnel and readiness.
