QDR, NPR Processes Begin

The Defense Department has begun the processes of reviewing the nation’s defense and nuclear deterrence policies, as required by Congress. The 2010 Quadrennial Defense Review will focus on determining which new policies, capabilities or initiatives should be adopted in order to prevent future conflicts, or win them should prevention be impossible. The new QDR will focus on increasing counterinsurgency capabilities, and providing military assistance to foreign countries. The Nuclear Posture Review, conducted in consultation with the Energy and State departments, will help establish the country’s nuclear deterrence stance for the next decade. Congress will receive both the QDR and NPR from DoD simultaneously, upon their completion.
