Report: Budget Woes Threaten ‘Hurricane Hunters’

The Air Force Reserve unit charged with flying into hurricanes could have to curtail such missions because of budget cuts, National Public Radio reported July 18. The report quotes Col. Craig La Fave, vice commander of the Keesler Air Force Base, Miss.-based 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron, as saying the unit probably could adjust schedules to fulfill flights into one or two storms this hurricane season. It would be nearly impossible, Le Fave said, to fly into more storms should they emerge. Like most federal agencies, he said, the unit is not exempt from furloughs under sequestration.
