Defense Secretary James Mattis has rejected a State Department request for a Marine security detachment at a U.S. facility in Taiwan, CNN reported. The State Department wanted 10 Marines to support activities at the American Institute, located just outside of Taipei, where 450 people would live and work. The U.S. does not recognize Taiwan as a separate country.
