Veterans who served in Afghanistan and Iraq combat are displaying symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) comparable to that experienced by veterans who served in Vietnam, according to a new VA study. Researchers gathered data from 579 male and female veterans who saw combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, and compared it with men who saw combat and women who served primarily in administrative jobs and the nurse corps in Vietnam. The study revealed that female veterans of Iraq and Afghanistan experienced PTSD symptoms more akin to those of their male contemporaries than female Vietnam veterans.
