Report: Taliban Propose POW Exchange

The Taliban have stated they would release the only known U.S. prisoner of war they are holding in exchange for five senior operatives now held at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, the Associated Press reported June 20. The prisoner, Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl of Hailey, Idaho, disappeared and presumably was captured in June 2009. The Obama administration is aware of the proposal, but would not confirm a willingness to engage in negotiations. State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said during a June 20 press briefing. "We’ve been very clear on our feelings about Sergeant Bergdahl and the need for him to be released, said State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki during a June 20 press briefing. "We have not made a decision to transfer any Taliban detainees from Guantanamo Bay, though we anticipate … that the Taliban will raise this issue. As we’ve long said, we’ll make any such decisions in consultation with Congress and according to U.S. law."
