Research Ship Named for Neil Armstrong

The Navy plans to name a new class of research ship – and the first vessel in the class – in honor of Neil Armstrong, the former Navy pilot who became the first man to walk on the moon. The first Armstrong-class Auxiliary General Oceanographic Research (AGOR) ship, AGOR 27, is under construction at Dakota Creek Industries, Inc., in Anacortes, Wash. When complete, the R/V Armstrong will have state-of-the art mapping and oceanographic-research capabilities. At 238 feet long, it will have a beam and operate at speeds greater than 12 knots – using highly efficient multi-drive, low-voltage diesel electric propulsion systems.
