Review of Navy Yard Shooting Concludes

In the aftermath of the Sept. 16, 2013 incident in which a government contractor named Aaron Alexis killed 12 persons and wounded three others at Washington Navy Yard, Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel approved a Pentagon panel’s recommendations that the department take four steps to bolster security at military facilities:

* Coordination between the Director of National Intelligence and the Office of Personnel Management in order to conduct automated record checks of persons with access to Defense Department facilities or classified information;

* Establishment within DoD of an Insider Threat Management and Analysis Center (DITMAC), to handle recommendations, mitigation, and oversight of any threats that insiders may pose to their colleagues or missions and resources;

* Centralization of authority, accountability, and programmatic integration under a single entity, which will have fiscal control over DoD personnel security resources, and;

* Expediting deployment of identity management enterprise services.
