Retired Air Force Master Sgt. Keary Miller received the Air Force Cross — the nation’s second-highest award for valor in combat — for his role in the March 4, 2002 Battle of Roberts Ridge in Afghanistan. Miller previously received a Silver Star for his actions. He is one of several service members whose awards recently were upgraded after a Pentagon review. A technical sergeant at the time, Miller was deployed as a pararescueman at the time with the 123rd Special Tactics Squadron, a unit attached to the Kentucky Air National Guard. The official record of combat action shows that Miller was part of a team that flew Army Rangers in two helicopters to the site of the fighting. Keary quickly went to work helping wounded comrades and distributing ammunition, all while under fire. He continued to assist the wounded until the operation ended. The award ceremony took place Jan. 30 at Hurlburt Field, Fla.
