Russian Planes Stalk Carrier

Two Russian navy Tu-142 “Bear” bombers flew within one nautical mile of the carrier Reagan late last month, Stars and Stripes reported Oct. 25. The maneuver prompted Reagan to scramble four F/A-18 Super Hornets and intercept the bombers, according to 7th Fleet officials. The incident took place in international waters, east of the Korean peninsula. The Russian planes did not respond to attempts to contact them, the Navy stated. The incident is the latest in a rash of such activities, which were commonplace during the Cold War but had subsided until U.S.-Russian relations soured in recent years.
