Service members who retired recently but did not enroll in the Survivor Benefits Plan will face high fees if they opt in to the SBP open enrollment that starts Oct. 1, 2005. According to the Military Officers Association of America, those who retired between one and 11 months ago will incur a fee of 38 times their initial monthly premium. Those retired at least one year but less than two years will pay 48 times their initial monthly premium. The fees stem from requirements for enrollees to pay all premiums they would have paid if they had enrolled when first eligible, plus interest, plus “any additional amount that the Secretary (of Defense) determines necessary to protect the actuarial soundness of the Department of Defense Military Retirement Fund against any increased risk for the fund that is associated with the election. “ (See next item.)
