Schwarzkopf, Desert Storm Commander, Dies

Retired Army Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf, who commanded coalition forces during Operation Desert Storm in 1991, has died. Schwarzkopf, 78, had been suffering from pneumonia. A 1956 graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., Schwarzkopf is credited with developing the “left hook” flanking maneuver, ultimately routing the Iraqi forces that had invaded Kuwait. During his Army career, Schwarzkopf served two tours in Vietnam. He earned three Distinguished Service Medals, three Silver Stars, a Legion of Merit, and a Distinguished Flying Cross. “General Schwarzkopf’s skilled leadership of that campaign liberated the Kuwaiti people and produced a decisive victory for the allied coalition,” Defense Secretary Leon E. Panetta said. “In the aftermath of that war, General Schwarzkopf was justly recognized as a brilliant strategist and inspiring leader. Today, we recall that enduring legacy and remember him as one of the great military giants of the 20th century.”
