Senate Okays More Milestone Measures

Last week the Senate passed long-awaited amendments to the fiscal 2006 authorization bill that would affect service members and their families. One seeks to double assignment incentive pay from $1,500 to $3,000. Another would give Reserve Component members mobilized for more than 30 days the same Basic Allowance for Housing their active-duty counterparts receive. And another would compensate certain mobilized Reserve Component members for their loss of federal civilian pay. Another amendment would reduce the retirement age (for pay purposes) of Reserve Component members by three months for each three months served on active duty since Sept. 11, 2001. The legislation also would authorize voluntary separation incentive pay for members with six to 19 years of service. And it would authorize Selective Early Retirement Boards for fiscal years 2006 through 2011. The measures will go to a joint conference committee.
