Soldier Misses Chance To Be a Heavy Metal Drummer

A Fort Drum, N.Y., soldier did not make the cut when he tried to become the next drummer for the heavy metal band Avenged Sevenfold. But Spec. Chris Hawkins did garner the attention and respect of the band anyway. Loudwire.com, a Web site devoted to the idiom, reported Oct. 1 that Hawkins submitted a video of himself covering some of the band’s tunes. “It’s a long shot, but that’s why I’m making this video,” the soldier, attached to 2nd Battalion, 22nd Infantry Division, told Loudwire.com. Shortly afterward, however, the band released a statement that they had indeed found another drummer. Then they tossed some kind words Hawkins’ way. “As for Mr. Chris Hawkins, you rule brother. We look forward to hearing about any future musical endeavors you may have. We appreciate the video and your service to our country. We will reach out and would love to meet with you when our paths cross,” the statement said.
